What to do in Virginia Beach During the Winter

Summer might be over but that doesn’t mean beach season has to end. With fewer crowds, lower prices, and plenty to do, Virginia Beach during the winter can be an ideal time to visit. Discover these different ways to enjoy Virginia Beach during the winter.

Whale Watching

Every winter, Humpback whales visit the Virginia Beach coastline, making whale watching a popular activity this time of year. A great way to see these beautiful creatures is to schedule a boat tour through the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center. Tours run from late December to early March and last around two hours.

Holiday lights on the boardwalk

In the spirit of the holiday season, The Virginia Beach Boardwalk gets a make-over with thousands of colorful holiday lights. The annual Holiday Lights Merry Mile covers 12 blocks, from 8th Street to 22nd Street. The light display will be available for all to see starting November 22nd through December 30th, 2018.

Chesapeake Bay Distillery

Let’s face it, a visit to Chesapeake Bay Distillery is fun no matter what time of year but can be particularly enjoyable in the winter by warming up with a smooth vodka in their vodka tasting room. Their flagship vodka, Blue Ridge Vodka, is a must try, but is also fun to mix it up with the Ghost Pepper Infused Vodka or the Dr. Stoner’s Fresh Herb Vodka.

Horseback riding on the beach

While it might be a bit cold for bikinis and beach towels, that doesn’t mean you still can’t enjoy Virginia’s sandy shores during the winter. Instead, head to the beach for horseback riding with Virginia Beach Horseback. Offered four days a week in the winter, visitors can choose from a 30-minute or an hour guided riding session.

Virginia Beach Polar Plunge

Take the plunge or just watch from the sidelines at the annual Virginia Beach Polar Plunge. As s charitable event for Special Olympics, daredevils plunge into the icy cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Truly the coolest event of the year! Event dates: February 1st and 2nd, 2019.

Kayak through Virginia Beach waterways

On a sunny, crisp cool winter day, kayaking through Virginia Beach’s many waterways is a great way to enjoy the outdoors. With miles and miles of waterways – rivers, bays, canals, and small lakes – all feeding into the Chesapeake Bay, make for excellent kayaking opportunities. Most of the waterways are accessed through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Kayak tours are available if you would like a guided outing.
